During the gold rush era it became a thriving port and still today, the prosperity from the gold mining days is evident. Strolling through the wide streets of Cooktown is like taking a step back in time. The well preserved architecture dates back hundreds of years and a visit to the Cooktown Historical Museum is a must. Perhaps lunch at 1770 cafe followed by the Guurrbi Tour where you can gain an amazing insight into Aboriginal culture and society.
