Great Barrier Reef Indigenous Ranger Program

Bungie Helicopters has been working closely with Indigenous Rangers across Cape York for over 15 years and are proud to be associated with our indigenous people who are constantly surveying and caring for our land, ocean and reefs.
We assist the rangers all over Cape York on a regular basis with aerial surveying, aerial spotting, stock and feral animal control and more recently were involved with the Indigenous Ranger Compliance Training Program developed and delivered at the Yaku Baja Muliko Ranger Base. This training was delivered to 24 participants who undertook the Certificate IV in Government Statutory Compliance

Most of us don’t get to see what goes on behind the scenes as these men and women work on a daily basis to protect our land and ocean.  They have specialised programs focussed on protecting the dugongs and turtles which play such an important part in the ecosystems of the reef.

In fact the dugong population statistics of a certain area can be used as an indicator of general ecosystem health. Did you know the dugong can grow up to 3 metres in length and weigh as much as 400 kilograms? The Queensland Government have listed the dugong as ‘vulnerable to extinction’ and in Australia they are protected by various pieces of legislation. In fact, Australia has the largest, and globally most important, refuge for dugong…. makes them worth protecting don’t you think?

Our marine turtles are also very special 🙂 We have six of the world’s seven species living in the waters around Australia and all of those six can be found in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. They are often called the ancient mariner’s of the sea and it’s said they have been around since the dinosaur age… more than 150 million years ago ??!!  About half of the species have been listed as endangered and our Indigenous Rangers play an important role in protecting them.

So…congratulations to all participants of the recent training program. We support the work you do and will continue to do all we possibly can to assist you in your mission to ensure this beautiful country and it’s inhabitants are protected for many years to come.

Signing out from the Bungie Heli Crew … Happy New Year!

Where to Stay and How to Play at the Tip of Cape York

Everybody knows it’s the best time of the year to head North and we are so pleased to be back at the Tip of Cape York showing tourists and locals the best way to see it all at the top. If you haven’t seen it from the air, then you really are missing out on something extra special.
The season started well over a month ago with one of our dedicated line pilots, Frank Bosca, who met the crew from Bondi Rescue along with Miss Oceania 2014 Courtney Thorpe and showed them the time of their life on one of our scenic flights out over the Torres Straits and the northernmost point of Australia!
Last week, our other awesome line pilot Ken Spann arrived and took over from Frank. Ken knows the area well and is good at what he does. He’s looking forward to what looks like a very busy season ahead!

Great job guys, we love your work! Just as we know all our passengers do!

Bungie Helicopters – Daintree, Weipa, Bamaga helicopter bases

There is no better way to see the beauty of our northern landscape than in the comfort, style and safety of an R44 Clipper II helicopter.
This year Bungie Helicopters has three iconic Cape York helicopter bases to depart from: beautiful Mossman in the Daintree, fishing mecca Weipa and Punsand Bay Resort in Bamaga at the northern most point of Australia.
Speaking of style, we have had an overwhelming response to the job done on our heli by Heli Services NQ and we agree it is a stunning result. As always Dan and his team of engineers have put our passengers and pilots in the safest of hands. Well done and thank you Heli Services NQ!
Here’s a few pictures from RSO’s maiden flight and christening party, stay tuned for our next story from Weipa where we introduce our talented new operations team and get to take Channel 7’s Creek to Coast hosts on a helifishing adventure.

The Lions Den Hotel & the Wilderness Coast Helicopter Tour

The infamous Lions Den Hotel was established in 1875 and is still going strong today. The name was taken from a nearby tin mine and the miners would record their pay packets and expenditure on the walls of the hotel. The walls are adorned with signatures that stem from the early mining days and this has now become a tradition for visitors from all over the world.
Fly along the famous Bloomfield track on your way to this iconic Aussie Pub for a cold beer and a meal.

Cape York Peninsula Information

Cape York Peninsula is a truly spectacular region. Featuring diverse terrain from rainforest to savanna, wild rivers and wetlands, Cape York is a simply amazing place to visit.

A series of large river systems including the Mitchell, Wenlock and Jardine rivers flow into the Gulf of Carpentaria. In the dry season, these river systems are largely reduced to a series of sandy river beds and waterholes. In the wet season however, the region’s rivers spread across extensive floodplains and coastal wetlands giving life to the region’s unique flora and fauna. The extensive wetlands on Cape York Peninsula”s east coast are the largest and most diverse in Australia.

Cape York Map

Travel by road to much of Cape York is limited to four-wheel drive (or charter boat) even in the dry season, and impossible in the wet. Travel by helicopter is an environmentally friendly way to visit sensitive world heritage areas without damaging the pristine environment. Our R44 has a significantly lower fuel consumption and ‘noise footprint’ than turbine helicopters, making it more practical and efficient for operating in this environment.

Many tourists choose to travel by charter helicopter because the journey to their destination is a breath-taking experience marked by beautiful scenery, rather than hot, dusty days on a bumpy road.

Fly to Cooktown

Approx. 3hrs, inc 60mins flight from $495pp Discover one of Australia’s last true frontiers. Cooktown is steeped with history and was discovered by Captain James Cook in 1770 when the HMS Endeavour hit a nearby reef in 1770. During the gold rush era it became a thriving port and still today, the prosperity from the gold mining days is evident. Strolling through the wide streets of Cooktown is like taking a step back in time. The well preserved architecture dates back hundreds of years and a visit to the Cooktown Historical Museum is a must. Perhaps lunch at 1770 cafe followed by the Guurrbi Tour where you can gain an amazing insight into Aboriginal culture and society.
